PROJECTION FILM

Historic Environment Scotland Film

‘Light Waves’ – an exciting collaboration with Historic Environment Scotland to create and produce a 10-minute film for a live-streaming event to celebrate the traditions, culture and heritage of Gaelic and Scots, past and present, as part of Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters 2020-2021.

‘With dramatic and immersive displays which have been projected onto historic sites located near Scotland’s shores, and powerful soundscapes of the multilingual poetic narration and emotive music, viewers will be taken on a journey to see Scotland’s history light up like never before.’ Gillian Urquhart, Events Manager HES

HOW WE DID IT

Light Box Focal Point

Showcasing the heritage and traditions of Scotland’s coasts and waters, the Double Take
Projections design team created bespoke animations sourced from archive historic footage
of women from Scotland’s fishing industry, historic maps and images from the Book of Kells
from Iona Abbey. Historic Scotland’s properties provided diverse backdrops for our shots
with our light box generating a focal point throughout filming at more than twenty historic
locations, rugged coastlines and awe-inspiring landscapes. The projections were filmed on a
variety of buildings and structures. The incorporation of our lightbox and lighting created a
breath-taking experience for the audience to view our short film.

‘…this film provides a great opportunity to celebrate the best of our Gaelic and Scots
culture, heritage and our beautiful coasts and waters.’ Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events at
VisitScotland

Dramatic and immersive

The Double Take Projections team travelled across Scotland including a trip to Iona
Abbey and a journey up to the beautiful Urquhart Castle to film the dramatic footage we
needed.

Poems were commissioned by three Scottish poets in response to the Gaelic word ‘Aiseag’
and narrated in three native languages – including a rare Shetland dialect. ‘Aiseag’ can mean
sea vessel, crossing, journey or act of deliverance and restitution in Scottish languages
which gave the poets a thread to weave through their emotional works. Niteworks
recorded a soundtrack commissioned for the film.

The result – our dramatic and immersive production was created with the combination of
our bespoke magical animations, the beautifully narrated poems, spectacular backdrops and
Niteworks’ dramatic soundtrack.
