17,000 torchbearers created a spectacular river of light as they followed the ‘Up Helly Aa Vikings’ from Shetland through Edinburgh to Holyrood Park where we projected the symbolic Scottish social media hashtags and quotes that the walkers were directed to use. A fantastic tradition to involved with.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2018 festival kicked off with the family favourite Torchlight Procession. This annual spectacle sees thousands of people walk through the streets of Edinburgh carrying torches to the fireworks finale in Holyrood Park. This year the 17,000 torchbearers, accompanied by friends and family and led by the ‘Up Helly Aa Vikings’, alongside youth pipe bands, brass bands and samba bands took a new route through Edinburgh’s Old Town past Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament. This is where Double Take Projections came in – projecting the giant, symbolic Scottish social media hashtags and quotes onto Salisbury Crags.

Hashtag Projection

The project #ScotWord asked 8- to 26-year-olds ‘What makes you most proud to live in Scotland?’. A panel selected their favourites and put them to a public vote. Double Take Projections projected the winning words as hashtags on to the Salisbury Crags. The revellers were directed to use them. These projections were a successful promotional tool gaining maximum exposure across social media as well as maintaining a consistent presence across all channels. We used 2 x 20,000 lumen projectors to beam the hashtags onto the Salisbury Crags from our base at the Scottish Parliament.
