LIGHT UP SHEFFIELD

Reverie Mural Projection

HOW WE DID IT

Dynamic, Living Canvas

At Pounds ParkLight Up Sheffield found one of its most playful and contemporary expressions through the projection of Peachzz’s acclaimed mural Reverie. Originally celebrated as a large-scale static artwork, the piece was reimagined through projection mapping as a dynamic, living canvas – bringing new energy and movement to the heart of the city. By carefully animating the mural’s distinctive forms and characters, the installation transformed the park into an immersive visual experience that invited audiences to see a familiar work in an entirely new way.

Sheffield’s Creative Culture

The projection design drew inspiration from Sheffield’s waterways, regeneration, and evolving urban identity, layering subtle motion, light, and narrative detail into the artwork. Elements within Reverie were gently brought to life through flowing animation, while playful references – including a nod to Pete McKee’s much-loved “Nana” character – added moments of discovery and local resonance. The result was a piece that felt both rooted in Sheffield’s creative culture and forward-looking in its use of digital storytelling.

Relaxed and Sociable Atmosphere

Running nightly as part of the wider Light Up Sheffield programme, the Pounds Park installation offered an accessible and engaging experience for audiences of all ages. Its open setting encouraged visitors to dwell, explore, and interact with the work at their own pace, creating a relaxed and sociable atmosphere that complemented the festive energy across the city. The seamless looping format allowed the projection to be experienced from multiple perspectives, rewarding repeat visits with new visual details and nuances.

Sheffield Champions Creativity

As a case study in translating street art into projection, Reverie at Pounds Park demonstrates the potential of digital placemaking to extend the life and reach of existing artworks. By bridging physical and projected media, the installation not only amplified the original mural’s impact but also contributed to a vibrant, contemporary cultural offer – reinforcing Sheffield’s reputation as a city that champions creativity, collaboration, and innovation in the public realm.
