Projection Mapped Spectacle

Following the success of our previous installation, Crewe Town Council commissioned Double Take Projections to produce and deliver another projection mapped spectacle on the Municipal Building. With the only creative requirements requesting that the show be engaging and fun for all the family, we were keen to keep pushing and exploring new ideas, resulting in an all-new custom animation – an explosion of sound and colour.

Signifying the grand switch-on of the festive lights and switch-on show to a crowd of over 11,000 revellers, the installation would act as a centrepiece for ‘Lumen, Crewe’s Festival of Light’. With projectors mounted in our trailer and the content scheduled via a Brightsign player, the show was able to run automatically every night throughout the Christmas period.

Psychedelic

This project provided us with an opportunity to push our abilities and explore new techniques in content creation – particularly with the 3D animation and modelling package Cinema 4D. Using a high-resolution template, we were able to virtually model and texture an accurate 3D representation of the Municipal Building. Using the 3D model as a foundation for the animation opened up a whole new workflow. A new technique that we explored was choreographing virtual lights in 3D space, resulting in a visually striking and vivid animation emulating a complex concert-style lighting rig – all mapped precisely to the building’s geometry and accentuating key features on the facade. As well as creating the illusion of the facade being constructed in 3D space, we morphed the building’s geometry while applying a whole host of textural overlays with psychedelic results. Creating wireframe cross-sections that resembled futuristic blueprints, we also experimented with a variety of rendering techniques, most notably Ambient Occlusion, which resulted in an amazingly vivid and colourful effect for the neon scene.

We commissioned composer and classically trained musician Barnaby Smith to create a custom soundtrack for our piece – accentuating all the small details in the animation and sonically binding all the scenes together. We appreciate how important sound design can be in creating an immersive experience for the audience and have invested in new and improved audio equipment.
